There are few traditions as charming or as delicious as Afternoon Tea.

It’s a chance to slow down, enjoy wonderful food, sip exceptional tea, and spend quality time with friends.

In a world that always seems to be rushing, afternoon tea reminds us that sometimes the best moments happen when we simply pause.

Where Did This Beloved Tradition Begin?

The story starts in the 1840s with Anna, the Duchess of Bedford. During the Victorian era, lunch was served early and dinner wasn’t until eight or nine in the evening. By mid-afternoon, the Duchess regularly found herself feeling peckish.

Her solution was wonderfully simple: she requested a pot of tea, fresh bread and butter, and a few sweet treats around four o’clock. Before long, she began inviting friends to join her, and what started as a simple afternoon snack quickly grew into one of England’s most elegant social traditions.

More than 180 years later, people around the world are still gathering around the teapot to celebrate Afternoon Tea Week!

What Makes Afternoon Tea So Special?

Contrary to what many people think, afternoon tea isn’t just a large meal—it’s an experience. A traditional afternoon tea usually features:

  • Delicate Finger Sandwiches: Savory, bite-sized sandwiches to start.
  • Freshly Baked Scones: Served warm with fruit preserves and rich cream.
  • Petite Desserts: Pastries, cookies, or small cakes to finish.
  • Exceptional Loose-Leaf Tea: Poured continuously throughout the afternoon.

The Perfect Classic Teas to Serve

While you can enjoy almost any tea, these classics have stood the test of time:

  • English Breakfast: A rich, full-bodied cup that pairs beautifully with savory sandwiches.
  • Earl Grey: Offers a signature bergamot aroma, making it a timeless favorite.
  • Organic Darjeeling: Often called the “Champagne of Teas,” its delicate floral notes complement lighter desserts.
  • Organic Assam: Bold, malty, and wonderful alongside a warm scone.

If you prefer something lighter, white teas, green teas, oolongs, and naturally caffeine-free herbal blends are equally delightful!

A Tradition That Fits Modern Life

You don’t need a castle. You don’t need fine china. You don’t even need a special occasion. Afternoon tea is simply an invitation to slow down.

Invite a friend, bring your mother, celebrate a birthday, reconnect with someone you haven’t seen in a while, or simply treat yourself, because you deserve something special, too.
