How We Take the Caffeine Out of Tea

Ever wished you could sip tea all day long… without worrying about caffeine disturbing your sleep?

Good news—you absolutely can.

But not all decaf tea is created equal… and there’s a little bit of magic (okay, science too) behind the best cups.

Let’s break it down in a way that’s equal parts cozy and fascinating:

All the Comfort, None of the Jitters

Decaf tea gives you everything you love—flavor, warmth, ritual—without the caffeine buzz.

That means no mid-afternoon jitters and no lying in bed wondering why your brain suddenly wants to solve life’s biggest mysteries at 3 am.

It’s your go-to for evenings, slow mornings, or “I just want another cup” moments.

Sleep-Friendly Sipping

Switching to decaf in the afternoon or evening can help support more restful sleep.

Think of it as your gentle wind-down companion—like a soft blanket, but in a mug.

Many evenings I will enjoy a cup of Decaf Lemon Supreme Green Tea as part of my evening wind down. I get the goodness of green tea plus the benefit of no caffeine.

Hydration You’ll Actually Enjoy

Tea absolutely counts toward your daily hydration.

And with decaf, you can sip freely all day long—no mental math (which makes me happy) about how much caffeine you’ve had.

My go-to is Decaf Peach Black Tea that I make into iced tea and drink year-round. You will always find a big jug in my refrigerator.

Still Packed with Goodness

Here’s the surprise: decaf tea contains many of the antioxidants found in regular tea. So you’re still giving your body a boost—just without the extra stimulation.

So… How to Remove the Caffeine?

This is where it gets fascinating.

One of the best methods is called CO₂ decaffeination—and it’s a favorite for high-quality teas like the ones I carry.

Instead of using harsh chemicals, this method uses pressurized carbon dioxide (yes, the same stuff that makes sparkling water bubbly) to gently remove caffeine from the leaves.

Here’s the Simple Version

  • Tea leaves are softened with moisture.
  • Pressurized CO₂ is introduced.
  • The CO₂ selectively pulls out the caffeine.
  • Everything else—the flavor, aroma, and good compounds—stays put.

It’s like carefully removing one ingredient from a recipe… without ruining the dish.

Why CO₂ Decaf Tastes Better

  • Preserves more of the tea’s natural flavor.
  • Keeps more of those beneficial antioxidants.
  • Leaves no chemical residue.

The result?

A cup that tastes like the real deal… not a watered-down version of it.

Anytime Tea Drinking

Decaf opens the door to tea drinking whenever you want.

Whether it's fruity iced teas at dinner like Decaf Raspberry Ceylon, Decaf Peach Black, Decaf Pomegranate Black, or Blueberry Mango Medley; delicious Decaf Chocolate Truffle or Decaf Heavenly Hazelnut Black; or cozy vanilla blends like Decaf Vanilla Dream before bed. Because it’s ok to have a second or third cup, just because you feel like it.

Next time you’re in the shop, ask about our CO₂ decaffeinated teas—we’d love to help you find one you’ll want to drink on repeat. Or if you’re not local, feel free to browse our extensive list of decaf teas on the website.

Because sometimes, the best kind of energy… is calm.
