Confused by All the Different Types of Tea? Green Tea
Posted by Dani Noto on

To help you feel more confident in your tea choices, we are continuing our 4-week Tea Tutorial Series.
This week, we are diving into Green Teas!

The Unoxidized Sibling 🌿
Remember, black, oolong, green, and white tea all come from the exact same plant (Camellia sinensis). Think of them as four siblings: same family, but very different personalities based on how the leaves are processed after picking.
Unlike black tea (fully oxidized) or oolong tea (partially oxidized), green tea is minimally processed and unoxidized. Heating the leaves quickly after harvesting locks in their fresh green color and preserves a powerful group of naturally occurring polyphenols called catechins.

What Green Tea Can Do for You
Green tea naturally contains lower caffeine levels than black or oolong tea, making it a wonderful option if you're looking to moderate your daily caffeine intake.
Green tea has also earned a reputation as a wellness powerhouse, making it a wonderful "supportive daily habit":
- Powerful Antioxidant Activity: Rich in catechins, green tea helps protect cells from oxidative damage and provides great support for a healthy immune system.
- Heart Health & Cholesterol Support: Studies suggest regular green tea consumption supports healthy cardiovascular function and may offer modest benefits for cholesterol levels.
- Blood Sugar Metabolism: Emerging research is investigating green tea’s role in supporting healthy glucose balance.
- Metabolic Health: Catechins have been studied for their subtle support of energy expenditure and fat metabolism. The effects are modest, not magical, but we’ll definitely take it!
- Brain & Cognitive Health: Tea compounds like catechins and L-theanine work together to support focus, attention, and general brain health.
- Oral Health: Green tea catechins help maintain a healthy mouth environment by reducing tartar buildup and supporting cavity prevention. Your dentist will definitely be impressed!

Combining the fresh, clean taste of green tea with all of these wellness perks makes it a truly worthwhile part of a healthy lifestyle. And you don't have to drink plain tea to get those benefits; in fact, I carry a flavor for every palate!
